8 Important Things To Know If You Try Microneedling

8 Important Things To Know If You Try Microneedling

By Samantha

Microneedling is a popular procedure you might have heard talked about in the skincare sphere.

Microneedling involves using a device fitted with hundreds of tiny needles, rolled or stamped gently over the surface of the skin. This creates micro-punctures that jumpstart your skin’s repairing abilities, improving the appearance of:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Scarring
  • Discoloration
  • Stretch marks
  • Large pores
  • Sagging skin
  • Other textural skin issues

Sounds pretty great, right?

But before you jump right into it, there are a few important things that you should know about if you want to try microneedling.

1. Size Matters

Microneedling tools range in size from 0.25mm to 2mm in length. What size you choose is entirely up to you and will depend on the severity of scarring you’re dealing with.

2. Quality Matters

If the needles on your microneedling tool are bent or dull, don’t use it. Always purchase your tools from a trusted supplier like Banish, and inspect your device prior to each use for wear or damage.

You also need to properly maintain your microneedling tool. Otherwise, you run the risk of infecting or damaging skin, which can lead to more painful breakouts and scarring.

Can You Still Try Microneedling Even If You Have Acne?

Using a microneedling tool on active acne is a big no-no. Not only are you increasing the risk of scarring by preventing the pimples from healing properly, but you also risk infection.

But if you have active acne, you don’t have to feel left out. You can enjoy the benefits of microneedling, too!

While the common version of the device works like a mini paint roller to cover large areas, a popular stamper version offers a safe alternative for use on scars around active acne.

You still shouldn’t use a microneedling tool on skin that is inflamed or irritated, or if you have rosacea or eczema.

4. MICRONEEDLING PROMOTES THE ABSORPTION OF SKIN CARE PRODUCTS

It can be both a blessing and a curse that microneedling enhances the absorption of your skin care products.

You need to be cautious if you’re also using products that sensitize your skin, such as benzoyl peroxide, retinol, acids, or exfoliants. Using these products while microneedling can make them even more irritating, so it’s best not to use them together.

On the plus side, you can use this to your advantage. Using hydrating and healing products after microneedling can result in greater improvement in your acne scars, not to mention your skin’s overall appearance.

Try it with the Banish oil! Not only will it soothe the redness and calm any irritation, it will also help those acne scars fade away!

5. SPEAKING OF REDNESS…

Usually, redness and irritation are a sign that you should stop using a product. Not so with microneedling.

It’s completely normal to experience some redness, and even some pain and irritation after a microneedling treatment. After all, you are superficially damaging your skin so that it initiates healing.

Don’t freak out, it will fade. Once the healing process begins, your skin will appear glowing and supple.

6. BUT IT DOESN’T HURT … MUCH

Depending on your pain tolerance and the size of your microneedling tool, it might hurt, but not much.

Treatments with large needles from a professional can require the use of a numbing cream, whereas at-home treatments are tolerable for most people. If you’re not sure if you’ll be able to endure the sensation, start out by using the smallest size and work your way up!

7. YOU’LL HAVE TO SKIP THE GYM THE NEXT DAY

Just like you don’t want to use irritating skin care products when you’re microneedling, you also don’t want to do anything that creates inflammation in the skin.

Things like going to the gym, relaxing in the sauna, or hitting the beach on a hot day, are out of the question for the following 24 hours.

8. YOU HAVE TO DO IT ON A SCHEDULE

The frequency of use will depend on the needle size you choose, but no matter what size you choose you need to be consistent.

The smaller the needle, the more often you can use it. The larger needles may require up to several weeks between treatments!

Remember, results are cumulative, so it will take time. To get truly great results, you’ll need several treatments.

It’s true that microneedling requires a bit of patience and forethought, but I think the results you can experience make it a worthwhile effort.

Not only is microneedling safe, affordable, and effective, but there are also options for people with all types of skin, meaning nobody must be stuck with acne scars.
