Lemon juice is among the most popular at-home acne remedies currently utilized by teens and adults alike. There are a multitude of reasons why lemon juice has caught so rapidly. An obvious perk to the treatment is that it is 100% natural. You are not polluting your skin with harsh, irritating ingredients as you would otherwise with over-the-counter products. Another benefit that comes to mind is cost. Lemons are readily available and can be had for little investment. With OTC products, it’s an entirely different story. You could purchase over a dozen lemons without even approaching the cost of a store-bought product. To ascertain a complete understanding of what makes lemon juice an effective solution in the fight against acne, we need to examine its potent properties.

Those of you that enjoyed chemistry back in school may recall that lemon juice is slightly acidic. On the pH scale, it ranks in at a 2. The pH scale is used to specify the acidity of a particular substance – 14 indicates a very basic substance, 7 a neutral one, and 0 a very acidic one. The acidic makeup of lemon juice makes it an ideal exfoliator. It can be used as a skin peel to help slough off dead skin cells. These skin cells are often responsible for clogging pores and thus causing acne breakouts. By making quick work of these troublesome cells, lemon juice helps combat acne. As a refresher, when our pores become inundated with dead skin, they clog and consequently allow sebum to pool within the poor. This sebum fuels acne bacteria within, ultimately surfacing in the form of an inflamed lesion on our skin. Although the peeling effect described above is beneficial and effective, it must be induced with caution. Applying sunscreen is but one of the precautionary steps that must be taken to avoid problems. It will protect your sensitive, peeling skin from the sun’s harmful rays. A sunburn is something you don’t want when your skin is already very sensitive. It is highly recommended that you minimize or simply avoid sun exposure during your lemon juice treatment. Once the peeling and sensitivity has subsided, you can stop using the lemon juice and start increasing your sun exposure. more…

The search for an accessible and effective acne cure has turned up little prospects. While new technology has aided in the development of improved treatments, millions continue to suffer at the hands of this skin disorder. The dermatological community agrees that a number of factors influence the development of acne. Unsuspecting products such as shampoos and toothpastes have been linked to acne. In searching of less-than-obvious causes of acne, few have mentioned water. Water is a substance most of use to cleanse our faces prior to applying topical acne treatments. It also comes into regular contact with our skin during bathing. If your acne has been completely unresponsive to over-the-counter and prescription treatments, the problem may be your home’s water quality.

We can classify water into two very broad categories: soft and hart water. Hard water refers to water that is rich in mineral content. This is the type of water available in most homes. Those that receive hard water are faced with a number of nuisances, primarily hard water deposits and soap scum on bathroom fixtures. Hard water is favored over its softer counterpart for a number of reasons. For one, it is far less corrosive hard water. Further, it does not extensive treatment. Soft water is derived though a process known as distillation, which is oftentimes costly in large-scale applications. Hard water derives its high mineral content from the ground, where it comes into contact with Calcium and Magnesium ions, among number of other minerals. more…

Shampoo and toothpaste are two household items that we use on a regular basis. Those of us that suffer from acne never think twice about what sort of influence these two products may have on our skin. If you currently suffer from acne, and are constantly having to deal with acne around your mouth and hairline that has been unresponsive to treatment, your choice of shampoo and/or toothpaste may be to blame. In order to protect your skin from further breakouts, you need to find a product that contains the right combination of ingredients. We will be exploring what makes a good product below.

The majority of shampoos and toothpastes currently available on the market contain an additive known as sodium lauryl sulfate. To understand why this additive is being widely used, we need to consider the type of water that reaches most homes. In the United States, more than three quarters of homes receive what is known as hard water. This water has a significant mineral content. You can generally tell whether or not your home receives this type of water by examining your bathroom fixtures. You could purchase over a dozen lemons without even approaching the cost of a store-bought product. To ascertain a complete understanding of what makes lemon juice an effective solution in the fight against acne, we need to examine its potent properties.

A basic understanding of chemistry tells us that lemon juice is a weak acid. It falls in the 2+ range on the pH scale. This scale is used in chemistry to measure acidity. One can harness this weak acid to help their skin shed dead skin cells. As you may already know, dead skin is often blamed for clogging pores and consequently causing acne. Lemon juice is a naturally-occurring acidic peel that will help bring replenished skin cells to the surface. In helping dispose of dead skin, lemon juice helps protect against a primary cause of acne. For a general overview, acne occurs when our pores become congested with dead skin cells and subsequently clog. The sebum that our skin excretes beings to accumulate within the clogged pore, and provides acne bacteria the needed food to start multiplying. Ultimately, these bacteria help create the inflamed lesions which we often associate with acne. It is important to take precautions before harnessing the potent peeling effect of lemon juice. For starters, sunscreen is a must. It will help shield your peeling and sensitive skin against sunlight, which can exacerbate the problem. A sunburn can be especially damaging when your skin has been left temporarily vulnerable by lemon juice, so be careful! If you can, try to minimize or outright eliminate sun exposure until the peeling effect has faded. At this point, if you see improvement, you should stop using lemon juice on your skin. more…

Nearly all popular brands of shampoo and toothpaste contain a chemical by the name of sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS. Before we discuss the harmful effects of this additive, we need to garner an understanding of where its utility has arisen from. Most homes in the United States are outfitted to receive hard water. This type of water has a substantial mineral content. With three-fourths of American homes receiving hard water, there is a large chance you have been cleansing your skin with this form of water. A quick check under the bathroom facet or showerhead should reveal whether or not your water is hard. An accumulation of mineral deposits is a sure indication of water hardness. more…
