A New Tuxedo: Your Best Buy.

It’s always possible to seek advice when considering the purchase of anything. Newspapers, television, the internet… there’s a limitless supply of it. The problem is that when you are thinking of buying a new tuxedo, much of the advice can appear to contradict. You will hear one expert telling everyone about the latest styles we should be wearing, then you have an “image consultant” (what a great job) telling us the exact opposite.

What most of these “experts” fail to take into consideration is this. We are all different and what looks great on one person, may be awful on another with the same physical features. The difference is our personalities.

The trick is to choose the suit that resonates with your personality. This is easier than it sounds. This means, for instance, that if you are a reserved sort of person, that you would not likely wish to put on a swanky tux with a lot of flashy appurtenances.

First, decide if you will be wearing the tuxedo mostly to the office or for the occasional social function, or both. If it’s both, choose a black tuxedo. It’s the most flexible. If it’s the office, choose a black or dark blue with optional pinstripe.

Secondly, figure out if you want to buy a ready-made tuxedo or have it tailored to your measurements. The so-called “off the peg” is always faster and easier to manage, but you may not be totally happy with the fit. Custom-made tuxes are elegant in design and durable, but will cost you more than ready to wear models.

The next consideration is your fabric selection. Pick a lighter material if you will be wearing your tuxedo more often in the summer. A heavier fabric, like tweed, will be a better choice for a man of slight build or if it will be worm more often in cold climate.

The tuxedo’s is also an important consideration. While you can sport a single breasted tuxedo just about anywhere, the double breasted tuxedo is regaining much of it’s lost popularity. Traditionally stylish, the double breasted tuxedo demands that the wearer displays confidence.

Fifthly, remember to coordinate the tie with the shirt. If you have chosen a black tux for an office gathering, combine a dark tie with a crisp white shirt. If you are dressing for a social event, the shirt can have a tasteful pattern while, in some cases, the tie can be eschewed altogether.

The final and most important piece of advice is to take a friend or partner along as a second opinion. When buying a tuxedo you want something that looks fantastic, not something you think looks acceptable.
